Perchloroethylene was the industry standard for decades. Modern hydrocarbon and liquid-CO2 solvents clean just as well without the toxic residue — ask any cleaner what they use.

How to Spot Greenwashing
Vague claims (“earth-friendly!”) mean little. Look for specifics: named solvents, water-recycling figures, biodegradable detergent brands. If a cleaner can’t name theirs, keep asking.
- Wash full loads in cold water at home.
- Choose concentrated, phosphate-free detergent.
- Air-dry when the weather allows.
